The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra is thrilled to invite you to a soulful celebration of one of jazz and R&B's most beloved legends! The Music of Al Jarreau, featuring Zachary Rushing and Larry Roy brings the timeless music of these iconic artists to life with the power and energy of Manitoba's premier big band.
Under the direction of renowned guitarist, arranger, and educator Larry Roy, and featuring the captivating vocals of Zachary Rushing, the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra presents a fresh take on some of the most memorable songs in jazz and R&B history. Audiences will be treated to the smooth grooves, sophisticated harmonies, and infectious rhythms that made Al Jarreau an international star.
Al Jarreau helped redefine the possibilities of jazz vocals and guitar performance. His music effortlessly blended jazz, R&B, pop, and soul, creating crossover hits while maintaining the artistry and improvisational spirit that made him a jazz icon. This concert celebrates his remarkable legacies through dynamic new big band arrangements and inspired performances from some of Manitoba's finest musicians.
Larry Roy has been a fixture of the Winnipeg music scene for more than four decades. A first-call guitarist, recording engineer, arranger, composer, and educator, Larry has performed and recorded throughout North America and Europe. He was a member of the faculty of the University of Manitoba's Jazz Studies program (recently retired) and has served as musical director for more than 150 live and pre-recorded radio and television productions. Larry was also nominated for a Juno Award alongside vocalist Erin Propp for their album Courage My Love.
Featured vocalist Zachary Rushing is an emerging voice on the Canadian jazz scene whose rich sound draws inspiration from artists such as Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, and Joni Mitchell. Originally from Seattle and now based in Winnipeg, Zachary has performed in musical theatre, classical, and contemporary settings, though he is most at home in the jazz tradition.
Known for his thoughtful interpretations and adventurous approach to repertoire, Zachary brings a fresh perspective to every performance.
Whether you are a longtime fan of Al Jarreau or simply love great music performed by exceptional artists, this concert promises an unforgettable evening of soulful vocals, masterful musicianship, and big band excitement.
