Explore the moral grey areas of the built environment in a lively ethics panel with a lawyer, engineer and philosopher.
About this Event

Three Perspectives. No Easy Answers. Probably Some Disagreement. Certainly Some Fun.

Ethics isn't always clear-cut. In the built environment, professionals regularly face situations where technical responsibility, commercial pressures, client expectations, and personal values intersect—often with no obvious right answer.

Join us for an engaging and thought-provoking evening as three industry experts—a lawyer, an engineer, and a philosopher—take on a series of challenging ethical dilemmas drawn from real-world professional practice. Expect lively debate, contrasting viewpoints, and insights that will challenge the way you think about ethics in the workplace.

Featuring:

Alex Hartmann – Partner, Hall & Wilcox
A leading construction lawyer with more than 30 years of experience, offering practical perspectives on the legal and ethical realities of project delivery.

Ben Moore – Audio-Visual & Theatre Consultant, Arup
Combining over 25 years of project experience with backgrounds in philosophy and psychotherapy, Ben brings a unique human-centred lens to complex ethical questions.

Pinar Smaragdis – Senior Associate, Building Services Engineer, JHA
An experienced engineer known for balancing technical excellence with creative problem-solving in the face of real project pressures.

Attendees are encouraged to submit ethical dilemmas and questions when registering, with opportunities throughout the evening to challenge the panel and contribute to the discussion.

Whether you're looking to gain valuable CPD hours, broaden your professional perspective, or simply enjoy a lively conversation with industry peers, this is an event not to be missed.

Professional Engineers can earn 2 hours of Ethics CPD— two-thirds of the three-hour ethics requirement—while enjoying networking, drinks, and refreshments in a relaxed setting.

No recordings. No scripted answers. Just honest conversations about the ethical challenges shaping the built environment today.

This event is free for CIBSE members, thanks to our host JHA. CIBSE gratefully acknowledges JHA for hosting the event at their offices and providing refreshments.
