About this Event

Curious about where middle housing is headed across North America?

With cities rewriting zoning rules, new policies unlocking multi-unit development on single-family lots, and a growing wave of citizen developers stepping in, middle housing is reshaping how we think about neighbourhoods. Whether you're a developer, builder, planner, policymaker, homeowner, or simply someone curious about the future of housing in Canada, join us at the Valentine Building, home of the University of Calgary's School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape for an evening of conversation, connection, and celebration.

Join us for an evening of education, discussion, and networking — with a little Stampede spirit thrown in. Boots and cowboy hats optional (and encouraged).

The night kicks off with a presentation by Alkarim Devani, co-founder and CEO of mddl, and Dr. John Brown, Dean of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at the University of Calgary, on the state of middle housing in North America. Alkarim will then facilitate a panel of leading housing experts diving deeper into topics such as the policy and regulatory shifts unlocking middle housing across Canada and the U.S., the realities of financing, design, and delivering small-scale infill, strategies to support homeowners and developers entering the space, and what it will take to scale middle housing to meet the moment. Audience Q&A to follow.

We're also using the evening to celebrate the official launch mddl U, Canada's first continuing education certificate in middle housing development, offered in partnership with the University of Calgary's School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape.

Stay late for live music from local Calgary musician Brayden Lowe, drinks, open networking, and the kickoff of something new.

This event is being co-hosted by mddl and the University of Calgary's School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape.

mddl (www.mddl.co) is a Calgary-based housing innovator focused on unlocking middle housing across Canada. Founded by Alkarim Devani and Darlene Jehn, mddl works with municipalities on policy harmonization, stakeholder engagement, and fast-track programming, while equipping homeowners, developers, and industry professionals with the tools, technology, and education to build more housing in established neighbourhoods. mddl was awarded Game Changer in the Canadian government's Stage 5 Level Up Housing Supply Challenge and is a grand prize winner of TELUS' Stand with Owners competition, with over 15,000 applicants.

The University of Calgary's School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (SAPL) is committed to redesigning cities through community-embedded, transdisciplinary learning. Through its partnership with mddl, SAPL is delivering mddl U — the first continuing education certificate of its kind in North America — through the University of Calgary Continuing Education.
