? The purpose of the event is to create a physical space for gender and sexual minorities to come together, celebrate queer identities and expressions and make the ballroom culture more known and accessible in Iceland.

? WHAT IS BALLROOM?
Ballroom is a queer subculture that aims to centralize LGBTQIA+ identities, especially racialized queer people. Ballroom originates from black communities in Harlem, New York but has since its inception in the 1960's spread all around the world. Ballroom serves as a safer space for Black, Brown, Trans and Queer folks in particular.
Ball events include several performative competition categories, in which participants get to showcase for example their fashion, beauty, music and voguing dance skills, among others.

?WHAT IS A KIKI BALL/ KIKI HOUSE?
A kiki ball is a smaller, more informal event within the ballroom scene, often organized by younger or emerging members of the community. It’s a space for people to compete in various categories, such as runway, voguing, and face, but with a more relaxed, community-focused atmosphere compared to larger mainstream balls.
Kiki balls also emphasize inclusivity and safety, often incorporating HIV awareness and safe-sex messaging. They're a way for newcomers to gain experience, build confidence, and practice their craft before stepping into the larger, more competitive world of ballroom.

?THIS EVENT:
In The Midnight Sun Kiki Ball, these different ballroom categories will be introduced to you by some of the most influential and experienced ballroom community members of various international Ballroom Kiki house members.
The event will consist of a pre-show and a Kiki ball with “open-to-all” competition categories as well as information on important Ballroom-related topics. After the ball, there's an epic afterparty with top DJs!
This event will also serve as the official afterparty of the Reykjavík Fringe Festival!
*There will also be educational workshops with the guest artists on the 6th & 7th of June, including a panel discussion on the afternoon of the 7th (see seperate events)

♿ACCESSIBILITY:
•Iðnó has ramps to the main entrance door, and an accessible bathroom on the ground floor next to the main hall. There is a wheelchair lift to reach the second floor.
The runway for contestants will be wheelchair accessible.
•There will be seating available for spectators who require seating
•All bathrooms in the house will be labeled as gender neutral for our event.
•During the afterparty, we will have a “calm/quiet room” available upstairs in Sunnusalur
•This event is for ages 20+ (Workshops the day before and earlier that day will be open for ages 15+)

?PRICING:
Tickets to this event will be on a sliding scale for both spectators and participants, with a suggested price of 3500 ISK. However, nobody will be turned away as long as there is capacity.
Tickets can be bought via the Reykjavík Fringe Festival website: https://rvkfringe.is/events/midnight-sun-kiki-ball/

❤️ SAFER SPACE POLICY
No to sexism, homophobia, transphobia, racism, ageism, ableism, body shaming or any form of discrimination. Yes to equality, diversity, creativity, love, participating, learning, new experiences and togetherness.
We strive to create a space where you can be yourself. Let’s not assume anything about other people. If something uncomfortable happens, please inform the organizers.
Please respect everyone’s boundaries. If you take photos/videos, please make sure you have consent from everyone visible in the photos/videos before posting the material online.
We hope that everyone will respect nature and make sustainable choices when preparing for the Ball. If you are not a BIPOC person, be mindful of the space you take up and the presentation you are bringing. Learn what cultural appropriation means and don't partake in it.
Volunteers from R.E.C Arts and Rvk Fringe will be in attendance, if you need any assistance regarding access, support, or work out a problem, you may approach them.
When in doubt or when you have questions regarding our safer space policies, please feel free to reach out via email to [email protected] . We're happy to support and guide you when needed.

? BALL CONTESTANT INFO?
There will be a backstage (accessible) for ball contestants but there is limited space to prepare outfits and store personal belongings, so we suggest all participants get as ready as possible before coming to the venue. Please be ready in advance before your category begins.
Please read the category description and outfit themes carefully beforehand. When in doubt, reach out to [email protected] via email. The organisers reserve the right to make changes.

✨CATEGORY DESCRIPTIONS AND THEMES✨

? Face OTA
Face is an iconic beauty category where you need to sell it with your one-of-a-kind face card. Show the judges your perfect skin, nose, eyes, smile and structure and get crowned the most show-stopping face of the night.
Draw your inspiration for the Icelandic folklore of Huldufolk/Elves, “The Hidden People”, incorporating some hints of magical and mysterious details in your ethereal look.

? Fashion Killa
For Fashion Killa you need to make some heads turn with a bold, outside-the-box, extravagant streetwear-style look. Get creative and create an unforgettably unique look that represents who you truly are outside the norms.
For this category you need to draw inspiration from one of Björk's iconic looks throughout her timeline. Recreate one of her most memorable looks and bring it in your statement version. Feel free to bring a picture of the original look with you.

? Best Outfit of the Night
Open to anyone and everyone, Best Outfit is all about bringing it in the fabbest look of them all, whether it's straight from the cover of vogue or a creation you've hand-crafted yourself. A great category for first-timers who wish to showcase their style without stylistic prerequisites.
Come as you are and show your own personal style and aesthetic to the max.

? Beginners Runway
Runway is a classic category where contestants bring to life the red carpet, strutting down the runway like a true supermodel. Whether you like your walk more feminine (European Runway) or more masculine (All American Runway) remember to come in a supermodel worthy look and an attitude that won't leave anyone cold!
For this category we want to see beautiful outfits inspired by the horizons and landscapes of Icelandic summer. Freely interpret elements of Icelandic nature and show us your radiant glow on the Runway.

? Lip Sync
Lip Sync needs no explanation! Bring it in any outfit you wish and make us all gag with your captivating lip sync performance!
For your 10’s, send the DJ your very own song to [email protected] . Max. duration 1 minute 30 seconds.
For the Battles please learn the lyrics of the first 2 minutes of the following songs:
Björk - Venus As A Boy (2 minutes)
Björk - Big Time Sensuality (2 minutes)
Björk - Hyper-Ballad (2 minutes)
Final battle whole song (3,5 minutes):
Björk - It's Oh So Quiet

?Realness OTA
Realness is a very important and historical category in Ballroom. Started out by transfeminine people in Ballroom teaching one another ways to survive in a trans-antagonistic society, realness is all about showing how well you blend in to everyday society as a cis-het passing individual.
Whether you're a trans woman, transman, gay man, lesbian or bisexual, you're free to walk this category and sell us your most convincing fantasy of being exactly like everyone else out there on the streets of this cis-heteronormative world. This category is dedicated to all the trans activists that paved the way for us to be here in celebration today.
Bring it as the girl or boy next door just strolling down Laugavegur minding their own business. Think everyday Reykjavik normcore, you know what to do!

? Baby Vogue
Baby Vogue is all about the brilliant art form of voguing. You may choose to express yourself in any of the three main styles of voguing: the Old Way, the New Way or Vogue Femme. Whichever one you choose, make sure you know its core elements and stick to that style throughout your participation from your 10s all the way to the final battle.
For Baby Vogue we want to see you embody the ever-shining Icelandic midnight sun. Bring it in hues of gold, yellow, orange and red, depending on how HOT you wanna make it!

? Body OTA
Whether you're a curvy luscious lady, a muscular bodybuilder, a sleek androgynous model or something totally else we want to be able to see your gorgeous shapes and lines!
All body types are welcome and celebrated but make sure you know what type of body you're selling on the floor and what your personal strengths are.
Serve your stunning body in your favourite beachwear. What would you wear to the local pool, or at Nauthólsvík during one of our heat waves?

? Sex Siren OTA
Originally opened by the Icon Jack Gorgeous Gucci to celebrate the glorious sex workers of the ballroom community, sex siren is all about making sure you're the most steaming-hot package in the room! Who cares about shape or size - being sexy is an energy, a lifestyle. Show us what you got and make the judges and crowd drool in their seats with your hotness.
Sell your sex appeal on whatever makes you feel most comfortable and sexy tonight.

? Shake That Ass
Another category that hardly needs to be explained - just hop on that floor and shake your money maker until the judges and the crowd are entirely sold! The ass that got the best shakes takes the win!
Come as you are and wear whatever gives most glory to your brilliant booty!

Samuli aka Emeree Angels has been active in the international ballroom scene since 2014. Their main categories are Butch Queen Performance and Hands Performance but throughout their decade of walking in the Ballroom scene they have also walked Face, All American Runway, European Runway and Realness with a Twist. She has walked balls in sixteen different countries, including New York and Paris, winning several grand prizes and making hot moments. They also work as a commentator and judge at local functions. Emeree has given numerous workshops and led Ballroom sessions in multiple cities in Finland as well as in Denmark, Hungary and Austria.

R.E.C Arts Reykjavík is an artist-activist collective founded in late 2021 aiming to uplift the voices of folks from marginalized communities in Iceland (POC, LGBTQIA+, Disabled folks, Refugees, Immigrants, etc). They do this both through education and the arts; hosting free community creative & discussion workshops, various specialty workshops, production of high-quality variety shows, casting, and consulting for/ working with various local and international organizations, businesses and institutions. R.E.C Arts has done work in both the youth sector and with adult populations of all sorts. They have also worked over the years with visiting artists from International Ballroom communities- hosting workshops with founders of the Kiki House of Sarmata (Poland), and with the Legendary Omari Oricci and the Legendary Monster Babylon (NYC). In 2023 they started House of Revolution, a variety show series in residence in the cabaret space at the National Theatre of Iceland. These shows are the only one of their kind in Iceland- showcasing professional performing artists of marginalized backgrounds who call Iceland home, and providing an inclusive (and very fun, high energy) space for all to feel a sense of community. R.E.C Arts was founded by Rebecca Hidalgo, Eva Yggdrasil and Chaiwe Sól Patiswa Drífudóttir.
