About the Event:
In its eighth year, The Michael Conway Annual Display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, serves as a space of reflection, healing, and education by honoring the lives and legacies of those we have lost to AIDS in Alabama and in the Southeast. The display is named in memory of Michael Conway, beloved son of long-time member of the congregation, Jan Conway.
This display part of the National AIDS Memorial's efforts to bring the Quilt to communities across the United States to raise greater awareness and education about HIV/AIDS and to remember those to the pandemic.
About the Quilt:
The National AIDS Memorial Quilt, initiated by the NAMES Project in 1985, stands as a powerful symbol of love and loss. It contains over 48,000 panels, making it the largest community art project in the world. It has been displayed at many locations globally, most notably on the National Mall in Washington D.C, where it covered 1.3 million square feet, representing the enormity of the AIDS crisis and spurring the US government to action. Each panel of the Quilt is created by loved ones, friends, and family members of those lost to the AIDS epidemic and includes personal messages, artwork, and mementos that reflect the life of the person being remembered.
AIDS in Birmingham:
As of 2021, Alabama has had over 14,000 reported cases of HIV/AIDS since the beginning of the epidemic, with approximately 8,000 individuals currently living with HIV/AIDS in the state.
Join us as we recommit ourselves to the fight against HIV/AIDS stigma, discrimination, and misinformation.
Stay tuned for more information about speakers and other opportunities around this year’s display!
