Join artists Jodi Green and Lisa Sylvestre at ArtSpeak Gallery, 1942 Wyandotte St. E., between September16 and 21, for a weeklong exploration of slow and sustainable textile based art practices.The Mending Room, a collaboration between asil and Levigator Press, invites you to participate in a series of events and activities:
The Daily Stitch:
Since January 1st, 2024, the artists have individually been engaged in a daily stitch project. Recording the passage of a day, everyday is a personal practice that offers time for contemplative and slow work. Though the work of each day is small, the cumulative visual impact of recorded days is striking. We will discuss our individual approaches to this project as we invite you to join us in our 2025 daily stitch. Our works in process will be on view during the week.
Fundamentals of Hand Stitch Workshop:
Offered at three times: Monday, September 16, Tuesday, September 17 and Wednesday, September 18 between 6:30 and 8pm. Learn to thread a needle and to tie a beautiful knot. You will learn the simple and versatile running and back stitches. These stitches are used as utility seam stitches, for raw edge applique, and as a decorative top stitch. The cost is $10.00 and registration is required. Please register at asil.ca in the Classes section.
Hand Quilting Class
Tuesday, September 17, 1-4pm. We will explore the fundamentals of quilt making and discuss what makes a quilt a quilt. You will learn basic hand piecing, hand quilting, and hand binding and leave with the knowledge to complete your very own tiny quilt. A selection of fabrics as well as batting, needles, and thread will be provided for class work. No previous quilting experience is necessary although a basic knowledge of hand sewing will help you get started. The cost is $50 + $10 materials fee. The Mending Room Share and Swap:
Our exhibit reception is Thursday, September 19 between 6 and 9 pm will include an artist materials Share and Swap. Donate the art and craft materials you no longer need and/or take what inspires you! This event will take place during the mending room’s reception and is marking our first step toward a permanent share space. We want your extra art materials, and we also want your ideas and thoughts to help us move this idea forward.

Mending Party:
Friday, September 20 from 6 until 9pm. Got some clothing items that could use a little love? Bring them along and we’ll to tend to those split seams and worn knees. More a gathering than a class but we’ll be on hand to get you started. If you have basic sewing supplies and patching material, bring them but we’ll have plenty of supplies to share for the evening. There is no cost to attend and you are welcome to bring a snack to share.

Sewing Circle:
Our regular third Saturday of the month *Sewing Circle is moving to ArtSpeak Gallery on Saturday, September 21 between 1 and 3pm and will close out our week. Embroidery, mending, knitting, crochet, hand quilting and everything in between: we want it all! Bring along whatever you’re working on and while this is not a formal class, we’re hoping for lots of sharing and learning, storytelling, and joyful making. There is no cost to attend and you are welcome to bring a snack to share!
