This book brings the masquerade to life through the varied and colourful experiences of the people, places, and material objects that were crucial in establishing this historic entertainment within the elite Georgian social calendar and public imaginations of the past and present. Using a wide range of archival, visual, and material evidence, The Masquerade uncovers the dramatic and extravagant past of the Georgian masquerade and is the first comprehensive study of this charismatic subject by a historian in the past forty years.

The characters -- outrageous, comedic, clever, glamorous, and villainous – as well as a range of objects, prints, paintings, and texts, immerse the reader into the Georgian world and bring to life the drama and excitement of the masquerade.
