The lunar and menstrual cosmology of the Hadzabe
Advertisement
Lunar metaphors linked to menstruation pervade Indigenous cosmologies across continents. They are found recurrently among African hunter-gatherers. Anthropologist Camilla Power explores the lunar/menstrual cosmology of the Hadzabe of Tanzania. Their marital, ritual and economic life is traditionally organised by lunar cycles, relating to beliefs on menstruation. She compares findings with unpublished material from James Woodburn, and discusses how this menstrual cosmology may be a significant aspect of gender egalitarianism.
