About this Event
Foraging 101: Foundations of Mushroom Identification
Mushroom foraging begins long before you step into the forest. A strong foundation in identification, ecological awareness, and safety is essential for anyone interested in learning how to work with wild fungi responsibly.
This Foraging 101 course is a classroom-based introduction to field mycology, designed to give participants the knowledge and confidence needed to begin identifying mushrooms in Colorado’s diverse environments. The focus is on building real understanding through structured instruction, not guesswork or surface-level information.
This course is led by Christopher Vinci, Lead Mycologist and Founder of the Colorado Foraging Company. Christopher is also the Founder and President of the University of Colorado Mycological Society and has taught mushroom identification and cultivation to students and community members across the state.
What you will learn:
-Core principles of mushroom identification
-Key anatomical features including gills, pores, spore color, and growth patterns
-How to recognize common toxic lookalikes and avoid dangerous mistakes
-The role of habitat, elevation, and seasonality in fungal growth across Colorado
-The methodology used by field mycologists to approach identification with confidence
Why this course matters:
Many people attempt to forage without the proper foundation, which can lead to confusion or serious safety risks. This course is designed to provide a clear framework for how to observe and interpret what you find in the field, giving you the tools to begin identifying mushrooms with confidence and accuracy.
What comes next:
This course serves as the first step in a two-part learning experience. Participants will have the opportunity to continue into Foraging 102, a guided outdoor field session hosted by the Colorado Foraging Company, where these concepts are applied in real time in Colorado’s natural environments.
Participants in Foraging 101 will receive a 15% discount code at the conclusion of the class for the Foraging 102 field experience.
Who this course is for:
-Beginners with little to no prior experience
-Outdoor enthusiasts looking to deepen their understanding of fungi
-Students and hobbyists interested in safe and responsible mushroom identification
-Anyone seeking a structured and professional introduction to foraging
*Important note:
