About this Event

The Longest Table Kensington: A Community Meal on Black Maternal Health. This spring, Brown Babies n’ Books invites you to gather at The Longest Table — a powerful, intentional community meal rooted in collective care, courageous conversation, and connection.

Brown Babies n’ Books is a Brooklyn-based nonprofit building legacy through literacy, representation, and community. We create inclusive spaces where children and families see themselves reflected in stories, gather in joy, and access resources that support thriving futures.

As our work has grown, one truth has remained clear: thriving children begin with supported mothers.

Mothers are the heart of our communities. They are culture bearers, storytellers, first teachers, and the foundation of generational stability. When mothers are cared for, families are strengthened. When mothers are heard, communities transform.

And yet — America is facing two urgent crises:

• A literacy crisis impacting our children’s futures

• A Black maternal health crisis impacting our families’ survival

Black women in the United States are significantly more likely to experience pregnancy-related complications and postpartum challenges. Access to safe, affirming, and culturally responsive care remains inequitable.

Maternal health and wellness is a pillar of our nonprofit work. The Longest Table is part of our expanding programming dedicated to advancing collective care, health equity, and safe birthing and postpartum experiences for Black and Brown birthing women — and for all women.

What Is The Longest Table?

The Longest Table is a shared dining experience where neighbors, families, educators, healthcare professionals, organizers, and community members sit together at one extended table.

There is no head of the table.

No hierarchy.

Just community.

Food becomes the bridge.

Conversation becomes the catalyst.

This is not a lecture.

This is not a panel.

This is a facilitated, community-centered dialogue where every voice matters.

What to Expect:

✨ A beautifully styled communal table in Kensington

✨ A shared meal rooted in connection and care

✨ Guided conversation on Black maternal health and equity

✨ Storytelling, lived experiences, and resource sharing

✨ Free books for children and families

✨ Music to ground and nourish the gathering

✨ Community literacy installations and activities for kids

✨ An intergenerational, family-friendly atmosphere

While adults engage in meaningful dialogue, children will experience joyful literacy-centered installations that affirm identity, imagination, and belonging — because caring for mothers also means nurturing the next generation.

We believe collective care is how we move forward.

We believe health equity is a community responsibility.

We believe that when we center Black mothers, we strengthen entire neighborhoods.

Come ready to eat.

Come ready to listen.

Come ready to share.

Come ready to imagine what equitable maternal care could truly look like.

Together, we build legacy — through literacy, representation, community, and care.
