The London School of Continental Philosophy

This 12-week seminar in Central London (August 19 - November 4, 2025) explores how 20th-century French thinkers reinvented philosophical traditions as spaces for conceptual experimentation. Participants will discover lesser-known philosophers - Émile Bréhier, Jules Vuillemin, Jean Hyppolite, and Jean Wahl - whose reinterpretations of Kant and Hegel significantly reshaped the intellectual landscape, influencing celebrated figures like Foucault, Derrida, Althusser, and Deleuze. By returning to these overlooked voices, we better understand the dynamic intellectual environment that gave rise to structuralism and post-structuralism, and see philosophy as deeply connected to avant-garde artistic practices.

The course assumes no prior knowledge of Kant or Hegel, clearly introducing their core ideas and relevance. We will trace how French philosophers not only adopted, but actively transformed these classical traditions, opening innovative dialogues between philosophy, literature, music, and science. Readings from Foucault, Deleuze, and others will highlight how these exchanges produced some of Continental thought’s most original and influential ideas.

Through discussions and guided readings, the seminar engages both newcomers and advanced students, inviting them to critically reflect on the creative evolution of philosophical concepts. It offers an accessible yet sophisticated introduction to structuralism, post-structuralism, and the rich interdisciplinary experimentation characteristic of French philosophy.

Led by Daniel, founder of The London School of Continental Philosophy, this seminar inaugurates a new educational project dedicated to accessible, critical explorations of Continental philosophy outside traditional university settings.
