The Living Link: Poppets, Taglocks & Sympathetic Magic
Monday, July 27, 2026
7:30 PM (Doors Open 6:45 PM)
The Witch's Hearth
1212 34 Ave SE, Calgary
Most witches have heard of poppets.
They're often misunderstood, reduced to folklore or Hollywood, or dismissed as little more than cloth dolls and superstition. In reality, they represent one of the oldest and most enduring magical principles found throughout folk magic and witchcraft: sympathetic magic.
At its heart, sympathetic magic asks us to consider a simple but profound idea—that things connected remain connected.
A name.
A photograph.
A handwritten note.
A lock of hair.
A piece of fabric.
A carefully crafted representation.
These are not magical because of what they are. They become meaningful because of the relationship they hold to the working and the intention behind it.
During this hands-on workshop, we will explore the foundations of poppet work, taglocks, personal concerns, symbolic representation, and energetic links while discussing the ethics, responsibilities, and discernment that should always accompany this kind of magical practice.
Together we will examine historical and contemporary approaches to sympathetic magic before creating a simple poppet that you will take home to continue working with in your own practice.
This workshop also marks the beginning of a new educational journey at The Witch's Hearth.
Over the coming months, we'll continue building on these foundations as we explore wards and magical protection, the foundations of baneful magic, magical influence, the Evil Eye, crossings, hexes, curses, and the ethics of navigating increasingly complex magical currents.
Each workshop is designed to stand on its own, but together they form a progressive path of study for witches who want to deepen their understanding of practical magic, magical responsibility, and thoughtful, intentional practice.
Included in this workshop:
• Foundations of sympathetic magic
• Poppets, taglocks & personal concerns
• Energetic links and symbolic representation
• Ethics, consent & magical responsibility
• Historical and contemporary folk practices
• Create and take home your own handcrafted poppet
