Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery is a historic rural cemetery located in Jersey City, New Jersey. It was established in 1829 by the first cemetery company founded in the State of New Jersey and is the size of 6 acres.The cemetery is an early example of Garden Style landscape cemeteries, but sadly fell into disrepair and was abandoned in 2008. A volunteer group has since been founded to maintain the cemetery, headed by the late Eileen Markenstein, the team has worked to restore and preserve this public green space. The location of the cemetery was used as an ammunition bunker for the War of 1812 and was a site of skirmishes in 1780 during the Revolutionary War Harsimus Cemetery is the final resting place of Charles Durant, who made the first ascent in a hot air balloon in the USA.
The Jersey City Oddities Market hosts a twice yearly fundraiser to support the efforts of the cemetery board, and to help fund the use of the goats who act as natural lawn mowers to maintain the grounds.
Established in 2016, The Jersey City Oddities and Alternative Art Market hosts rotating vendors and artists who specialise in the odd and unusual. From professional taxidermists to curators of antiques and collectibles, the market focuses on offbeat goods. This year's vendor lineup includes longtime favorites Brain Fever Artwork, The Oil Well, Psychonaut Surreality, Phantasmeow, and Antisocial Jewelry Company, amongst some new faces.
