Photographer Stuart Linden Rhodes showcases his archive of images from the 1990s queer scene in Northern England
About this Event

Stuart Linden Rhodes was the roving reporter for APN and the Gay Times during the early to mid 1990s, covering mainly the north of England. Stuart’s photography seeks to portray a people defiant in the face of the AIDS crises and discriminatory laws. He photographed not only the nightlife but also major events such as Gay Pride and Mr Gay UK, exploring the rapid growth in the diverse northern UK queer scene and club culture.

He used the pseudonym 'Linden' to protect his career in teaching, due to concerns generated by the Section 28 legislation.

At home in North Yorkshire during the Covid lockdowns of 2020-21, Stuart Linden Rhodes established the Linden Archives, an online window into the thriving gay scene of the 1990s. This talk will explore how the archive came about and the gay scene in the 1990s across England. Stuart will also show a wide selection of photos and tell the stories behind them.
