On November 8th, more than two dozen known local artists will clear their storage and studios of older work, selling it at half price to make room for new work. The unusual art fair will be held at the headquarters of CAPE (Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education, www.capechicago.org), a production of independent curators Susan Aurinko and Susan Blackman, also known as Curators Gone Rogue. The duo, who have been working together for nearly five years, have curated many exhibitions together to support Chicago’s artists and introduce some of the city’s galleries to artists they may not have previously known. All participating artists will be present for the entire show to chat with event guests.
The artists pay a minimal fee to display their work in one of several different-sized spaces within the enormous venue and retain 100% of the profits from the sale of their work, which is an unusual model for artists accustomed to giving 50% of their sales to a gallery. As the show is an invitational, Curators Gone Rogue chose participants from their extensive list of known artists, invited them, and later included artists they had juried into the show. The duo views this as a beta or trial of the concept and hopes to expand the show in the future, making it an alternative to the big, pricey art fairs and creating an affordable opportunity for all artists to exhibit, rather than just those affiliated with galleries.
A Collectors Preview will take place at CAPE’s galleries and offices at 1010 West 35th Street on the 6th floor, suite 697, from 11 am to 12 and 12 – 5 PM for the public on the 8th of November. There is no entrance fee, but guests will be asked to donate to CAPE upon entry.
