About this Event
The Life and Work of Ellen Koment – A Retrospective
Reception with the artist: Saturday, January 25, 5–8:00 pm
Ellen Koment is an artist and teacher who attended The Cooper Union Art School and has an MFA in painting from UC Berkeley. She has been painting and exhibiting in galleries and museums for almost 50 years. In the last few decades her efforts have concentrated on encaustic art, a medium especially suited to her artistic vision and technical approach:
"Pouring wax on paper requires me to be fully present in the process and aware of all that is happening on the page.
The technique is changeable and responsive, a zone between chaos and control where I can plan or accept accidents, act and react."
Throughout her long artistic career, she has explored mediums as varied as stained glass, watercolor, oil, and acrylic. Whether her work is figurative or abstract, she has always kept form, color, and line at the forefront of her mind. She has traveled widely, lived in many places, exposed herself to myriad sources of inspiration, all of which has gone into her work. In the end, painting has been her life's unifying factor.
"You have to take everything you are and everything you know and allow it to become your painting. This is what I call painting from the heart."
The exhibition runs Thursday, January 23 through Sunday, March 9, 2025
