About this Event

7th House and filmmaker Matt Yoka (WHIRLYBIRD) present a special screening of THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK (1972), followed by a panel with special guests (TBA!) in conversation about the film’s legacy, Bigfoot (and his cryptid cousins) lore, sightings, and the strange, enduring appeal of these creatures in American culture.

Written, directed, and shot by first-time director Charles B. Pierce on a shoestring budget in the early ’70s, THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK follows reports of the so-called Fouke Monster—a three-toed, Bigfoot-like creature said to roam the woods and waterways of Fouke, Arkansas. Pulling from local accounts and firsthand testimony of encounters spanning 30 years, Pierce mixes interviews, reenactments, and location footage into something that blurs folklore, reportage, and low-budget horror.

The film’s singular vibe is languid, eerie, and atmospheric, with the creature (fittingly) rarely seen clearly—just as it’s seen by the locals, whose earnestly unsettled testimonials carry as much weight as anything shown on screen.

Originally self-distributed by Pierce—who toured the film from town to town before it became an unlikely hit—BOGGY CREEK went on to gross millions and play for years across drive-ins, theaters, and television, embedding itself in the cultural imagination and ensuring its cult classic status. It helped shape a form that treats the unbelievable with documentary seriousness—mixing testimony, speculation, and dramatization in ways that would echo through decades of paranormal media, from TV series like IN SEARCH OF… to the found-footage horror of films like THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (whose co-director Daniel Myrick said “We just wanted to make a movie that tapped into the primal fear generated by the fact-or-fiction format, like LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK.”)

Presented in conjunction with 7th House’s celebration of Gary D. Rhodes’s instantly indispensable new compendium Weirdumentary, join your host Matt Yoka and guests for a night of strange encounters, local legend, and one of the most enduring Bigfoot films ever made, that insists—just maybe—that it all really happened.
