The legacy of John E. Brownlee in law, politics, and farming(1883-1961)
About this Event
John E. Brownlee started his legal career as a young farmers’ lawyer, providing counsel for the United Farmers of Alberta (UFA) before rising to become Alberta’s Attorney General and, eventually, a two‑term Premier. Deeply involved with the Alberta Wheat Pool and United Grain Growers, Brownlee played a pivotal role in shaping the province’s co‑operative movement and grain industry. His life and career left a lasting impact on Alberta’s political landscape, its legal development, the evolution of co‑operative agriculture, and security of Alberta’s natural resources. Had a seduction / shakedown scandal not mired his term in office, he would undoubtedly contend for the position of best Alberta Premier.
Presenters: Brenda McCafferty, Legal Archives Society of Alberta and Erin Hoar, United Farmers Historical Society.
