The last light of summer: forest bathing in Bedolpian wood
About this Event
An afternoon that feels different
There's an afternoon in late September when you step outside and the air surprises you. Thinner. Cleaner. Already leaning towards autumn.
What you carry with you
You reach the end of summer with a full head. Months of things done, said, postponed. Your body is asking for a different rhythm and has no words for it. Stress doesn't shout. It accumulates quietly.
What actually happens in the body
The forest is good at what we're bad at: slowing down. Trees release phytoncides, volatile compounds they use to defend themselves against pests. Breathing them in increases the activity of our Natural Killer cells — documented by Qing Li at the Nippon Medical University in Tokyo. Meanwhile cortisol drops and the parasympathetic nervous system takes over. This isn't atmosphere. It's physiology, and it's why forest bathing is now studied as a practice of wellbeing in nature rather than as a walk.
Why Bedolpian
Bedolpian sits at 1,200 metres above Baselga di Piné, on the Piné plateau in Trentino, in the foothills of the Dolomites north-east of Trento. In October 2018 storm Vaia flattened much of the spruce forest here. Today this wood is rewriting itself: fallen trunks, open clearings, young growth climbing into the new light. In late September the first larches begin to turn and the afternoon light arrives low and golden. It's the last light of summer, and it doesn't last.

One last thought
Summer doesn't end. It settles. The forest is the best place to notice it happening.
