Duruflé Requiem at Manchester Cathedral
The Tallis Choral Foundation returns with an atmospheric evening of French and English masterworks in the magnificent surroundings of Manchester Cathedral.
At the heart of the programme is Maurice Duruflé’s luminous Requiem - one of the twentieth century’s most beloved choral works. Inspired by Gregorian chant, the work unfolds with extraordinary warmth, serenity and colour, from the haunting Pie Jesu to the transcendent In Paradisum.
The performance is accompanied throughout by acclaimed organist Jeremiah Stephenson, Associate Organist of St Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, performing on Manchester Cathedral’s celebrated Tickell organ. The programme also includes Duruflé’s exquisite Sicilienne for solo organ, showcasing the instrument’s remarkable palette of colour and atmosphere.
The Foundation is also delighted to be joined by violinist Jenny Wells, scholarship holder at the Royal Academy of Music. She appears as soloist in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending in Paul Drayton’s ethereal arrangement for violin and choir, alongside Vaughan Williams’ deeply moving Serenade to Music, featuring step-out soloists drawn from within the choir itself.
Audience members will have the rare opportunity to experience the performance from close to the nave console, witnessing the interaction between singers, soloists and organist at close quarters within the cathedral’s extraordinary acoustic.
Performed by the Tallis Choral Foundation - a UK-registered charity (1214841) dedicated to supporting outstanding young musicians at the beginning of their professional careers.
