This workshop is intended to get you started or keep you moving forward on the pandeiro, the increasingly popular and versatile instrument instructor Brian Rice likes to call a laptop batucada.
We will explore the basics of good technique to improve your speed and comfort when playing.
We will learn about the most important rhythms, like samba and choro, as well as less common rhythms and extended techniques.
Open to all levels.
Instruments can be provided at prior request.
About Brian Rice
Brian Rice, a Bay Area percussionist, performer, educator, and recording artist, specializes in Brazilian and Afro-Cuban percussion, collaborating with musicians like Mike Marshall, Jovino Santos Neto, and Claudia Villela. With over 75 recordings, Brian’s rhythmic mastery shines. In 2023, he premiered the first pandeiro concerto with the Diablo Symphony Orchestra and released his album “Três Baías” in 2019. He’s graced venues like Lincoln Center and NPR Tiny Desk Concert with the Danilo Brito Quintet. Brian is the co-founder of the Berkeley Festival of Choro and has over 35 years of teaching experience. He directs ensembles at UC Davis, where he nurtures students’ passion for rhythm and music.
