THE KINGDOM EXODUS (Episodes 1-3)
RIGET: EXODUS
Denmark/Sweden/Belgium, 2022, Lars von Trier
25 years after turning his back on the hellacious Danish hospital that was the indelible setting for his two surreal TV miniseries The Kingdom (1994) and The Kingdom II (1997), writer-director Lars von Trier has revisited the place and its bizarre human and demon denizens. Aided by original co-writer Niels Vørsel and returning cast members (and some new faces), von Trier has concocted five new one-hour episodes teeming with weird occurrences and strange behaviors in the bowels of this haunted healthcare center (nicknamed “the kingdom”) that was built on Copenhagen’s ancient textile-bleaching ponds. Outlandish comedy, supernatural horror, and scurrilous satire rule in this kingdom; if David Lynch’s Twin Peaks ever became ill in Denmark, it would go to this place. With Udo Kier, Alexander Skarsgård, and Willem Dafoe. Cleveland theatrical premiere. Subtitles. DCP. Approx. 180 min.
General admission $11; members, CIA & CSU I.D.holders, and those age 25 & under $8.
Masks are currently optional for moviegoers, but still encouraged. Learn more under the “Face Coverings” section at cia.edu/covid.
As a reminder, filmgoers can park for free in Lot 73 and in the Institute's annex lot, and should enter CIA via nearby Entrance C. Click here for a map.
