The Killers
80th Anniversary!
(1946, 103min/color, DCP) Burt Lancaster, Ava Gardner, Edmond O’Brien, Albert Dekker, and Sam Levene. Directed by Robert Siodmak.
Two hit men walk into a diner asking for a man called "the Swede" (Burt Lancaster). When the killers find the Swede, he's expecting them and doesn't put up a fight. Since the Swede had a life insurance policy, an investigator (Edmond O'Brien), on a hunch, decides to look into the murder. As the Swede's past is laid bare, it comes to light that he was in love with a beautiful woman (Ava Gardner) who may have lured him into pulling off a bank robbery overseen by another man (Albert Dekker).
The Killing
70th Anniversary!
(1956, 84min/color, DCP) Sterling Hayden, Coleen Gray, Vince Edwards, and Elisha Cook, Jr. Directed by Stanley Kubrick.
When ex-con Johnny Clay (Sterling Hayden) says he has a plan to make a killing, everybody wants to be in on the action. Especially when the plan is to steal $2 million in a racetrack robbery scheme in which "no one will get hurt." But despite all their careful plotting, Clay and his men have overlooked one thing: Sherry Peatty (Marie Windsor), who's planning to make a financial killing of her own...even if she has to wipe out Clay's entire gang to do it! Directed with a revolutionary story-telling technique by the legendary Stanley Kubrick, The Killing is tough, taut, tense and one of the greatest crime thrillers ever made.
