About this Event
The Karely Paolo Quintet
This Quintet has been specially assembled for the KBJC gig, combining the rich, varied and exciting new talents of these young, upcoming jazz musicians.
Their repertoire will include standards, such as Stella by Starlight, delivered by a wonderful vocalist and superb rhythm section; and, some modern takes on these familiar and established tunes.
Karely Paola Correa Mamani – Guitar
Quintet-leader, Karely, began her journey with music playing Bolivian folk music with a group formed by her father, playing at family and cultural events.
Arriving at the University of Birmingham (UoB) , she had already begun her exploration of jazz and became part of Tomorrow’s Warriors, a London-based youth jazz organisation.
She attended a two-week jazz school in America and seeing greats such as Winard Harper and Christian McBride perform every day, cemented her career choice as a musician.
Aidan Kemp-Harper – Piano
Aidan plays at UoB alongside his studies of Physics. Taking a Bill Evans-esc journey, he began with classical piano at the age of 7, gravitating to jazz music for further expression on the instrument.
Aidan has since been studying his favourite players - Keith Jarret and Oscar Peterson.
Eddie Holmes – Drums
Birmingham-based jazz drummer, composer, Eddie recently returned from a year in New York, where he studied drums with Dennis Mackerel and composition with Michael Mossman.
As a performer, he has appeared at leading venues across the UK, including Cadogan Hall in London and CBSO Centre in Birmingham. As a composer, he enjoys writing for a wide range of musical contexts, spanning from electro-acoustic to original jazz compositions.
Astra Sina – Vocals
Astra began singing 'properly', as she likes to call it, in the last five years, getting into jazz two years ago. Picking up the saxophone led her into jazz, initially with the Walsall Jazz Improv Group.
Community jazz clubs have provided opportunities and wider experience, including the Walsall Jazz Combo. Gigging at the Eastside venue, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and playing on a Germany tour have deepened her jazz knowledge.
Jack G – Double Bass
Jack began his musical journey on double bass 18 years ago. He was a junior scholar at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM).
His introduction to jazz came when he joined small ensemble, Octopus; and gigged across South Yorkshire and Derbyshire. Since then, he’s embraced the versatility of the bass, performing across a remarkable variety of settings - from traditional big bands to more unconventional line-ups. His musical tastes are rooted in the classic standards and bossa nova rhythms.
