The John Shea Trio is thrilled, excited, and delighted to play for you! With over 30 years of experience playing together, The John Shea Trio are one of the very best, most popular piano jazz trio in all of GR/West Michigan. They will be performing on our Greenhouse Stage!Early History: John was a professional musical theater prodigy from age 15. He played 25 shows for his hometown Battle Creek Civic Theater. Then he joined legendary bandleader drummer/singer Bennie Carew. They played the downtown Kalamazoo Radisson 5 nights a week, Then: The Park Place in Traverse City for the Summer. The Harley Hotel brought them back to Grand Rapids, where Bennie passed the baton to John, and it turned into a 5 year stint. Summers were spent at Billie's Boathouse and Toulouse French Bistro. Bookings everywhere imaginable followed including JW Marriott and Amway Grand Plaza's Rendezvous Lounge.
John's smooth, swinging, elegant style is comparable to Erroll Garner, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, George Shearing, and ,of course, Duke Ellington. Upright bassists Rob Hartman and Jordan Richards are total professionals, sounding like Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, Oscar Pettiford, and NHOP Pedersen. Drummer Fred Knapp is the softest, swingingest player in the whole area, and one heck of a singer. He sings like Chet Baker.
