Humboldt Park Cinema Club (HPCC) is a film screening initiative primarily located in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL, providing opportunities for local film screenings for the community, while also offering the opportunity for guest curators to program films.
We'd love to see you for November's pop-up series titled Optimism Onscreen: The Birth of Sound, The End of the Depression, and the Movie-Musical Golden Age. This series, curated by Imani Davis (Curator-in-Residence at Facility Theatre) visits the decades between the 1930s and the early 1950s when musicals dominated the big screen. The largely American genre emerged alongside the invention of sound in film in the late 1920s, with the first ever full-length sound picture being The Jazz Singer (1927). As Vulture states in an article, movie musicals filled with “..mindless extravaganzas satisfied Depression-era audiences seeking escapist entertainment and thus turned a profit for studios.” As we emerge into a new phase of life for society that is less affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, what parallels can we draw between this current period and the period after the Great Depression? Are we once again looking for escapism in our content?
