About this Event
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is the most powerful observatory ever launched into space. It can see light that is invisible to our eyes, peer through dust clouds, and look back in time to the earliest stars and galaxies. In this 90 minute STEM presentation, students will explore how Webb works, what it is discovering, and why it is transforming our understanding of the universe.
Kids will learn about:
• Webb’s giant mirror and how it was built and deployed
• its unique orbit around the Sun
• what infrared light reveals that visible light cannot
• the engineering challenges, including unfolding a giant telescope in deep space
• how Webb studies exoplanets, distant galaxies, and the early universe
Interactive:
Designed for ages 10–16, this session includes hands-on demonstrations of infrared concepts, mirror design, and light filtering. Students will explore how telescopes gather light, how detectors work, and how scientists turn raw data into the stunning images we see today.
Parent Value:
Parents will appreciate how this presentation blends astronomy, physics, and real NASA science in a way that is accessible, accurate, and inspiring.
