As Italy of the 16th century once again claimed its place as the artistic heart of Europe, it became a crucible of creativity not solely through its own sons and daughters but through the vital contributions of those who lived on its margins. Foreign composers, women artists, and those displaced by faith or war found themselves at the edges of the Italian cultural sphere, yet their voices and visions profoundly shaped its artistic core. This program seeks to illuminate those margins and their indispensable role in creating the rich tapestry of Renaissance and early Baroque music.Concert program:

The repertoire bridges the extraordinary diversity of these figures. From the Flemish expatriate Giaches se Wert, to Maddalena Casulana, whose five-voice madrigals reveal a female composer’s unprecedented mastery, celebrated by none other than Orlando di Lasso. Peter Philips, an Englishman exiled for his Catholic faith, traversed the European continent, blending influences as he crafted works teeming with vivid imagery—lions, dragons, angels—that rise to meet the heavens. And in the works of Raffaella Aleotti, we hear a convent-bound composer reaching for communion with the stars themselves.
