About the Talk

Dr Kiruba Munusamy will talk about the role of the legal system in dismantling, and sometimes perpetuating, caste-based inequalities

About the Speaker

Dr Kiruba Munusamy is an ESRC Post-Doctoral Fellow at the School of Law and Social Sciences, Middlesex University London, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council for the project ‘Transforming Institutional Justice for Caste-Based Discrimination and Violence’. She holds a doctoral degree in Law from Middlesex University London, where her thesis “‘In the Interests of Justice’: Cases of Caste Violence in the Supreme Court of India”, critically examined the judicial responses of the Supreme Court of India to caste-based violence. A lawyer by training, she practised before the Supreme Court of India and the High Court of Madras from 2008 to 2020, litigating human rights violations. Recognised with ‘Change Maker 2025’ and ‘Social Impact–Achiever’ awards, she has been actively engaged in grassroots advocacy on caste-based discrimination and violence, caste–gender intersections, the right to dignity, freedom of speech and expression, abolition of the death penalty, and queer rights. As a critical legal scholar, her research focuses on caste and law, legal institutions, access to justice, and justice delivery. She currently leads legal research with India Labour Solidarity, a UK-based collective, examining the designation of India as a 'safe country' and the institutional and legal challenges faced by Indian asylum seekers in the United Kingdom.
