About this Event
Step into an evening of thought-provoking exploration as Owamni hosts an intimate book reading event featuring Carrie Lowry Schuettpelz, a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, and her debut book, The Indian Card. This groundbreaking work delves into one of the most deeply personal and contentious questions faced by Native Americans today: “Who gets to be Native in America?” Through a powerful blend of personal narrative, in-depth interviews, and archival research, Carrie unpacks the layers of tribal enrollment, identity, and the federal government’s role in shaping—and often limiting—what it means to be Native.
As a former policy advisor in the Obama Administration, Carrie brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her writing, offering an unflinching look at how federal policies have influenced Indigenous identity formation over time. The Indian Card reflects on both the personal and collective struggles that Native people face when their very existence is measured by laws and guidelines they didn’t create.
The evening will include a dynamic panel discussion between Carrie and Chef Sean Sherman, founder of The Sioux Chef, Owamni, and NATIFS, exploring the intersections of Native foodways, culture, and identity. As two trailblazers in their respective fields, their dialogue will dive deep into contemporary Native life and the ongoing fight for sovereignty and recognition. Carrie and Sean will be joined by Karen Diver, who was interviewed for the book; Flatiron Books Senior Editor Lee Oglesby will moderate the conversation.
Whether you're well-versed in Native policy or just beginning to explore these critical issues, this event will provide invaluable insight into the complexities of tribal identity and sovereignty in modern America. Books will be available for purchase through Birchbark Books, giving you the chance to take home The Indian Card and continue the conversation long after the event concludes.
Guests will also have the opportunity to sample a specially curated tea blend created for this event.
