About this Event
The preservation of family and community is a high priority within DBI. We work to raise awareness of including and implementing the thoughts and opinions of persons currently and formerly incarcerated. Despite the millions of families affected by incarceration on any given day, the well-being of incarcerated persons, their families, and children have not always been an essential part of society’s social policy agenda. Similarly, services and activities that assist incarcerated parents in carrying out family roles and responsibilities should be visible in the strategic plans of social services agencies or corrections departments. On May 2nd, Daughters Beyond Incarceration passed House Resolution number 7, authored by Representative Denise Marcelle, creating an opportunity for incarcerated persons to attend a child's graduation virtually. This resolution applies to all students across the state of Louisiana. With the help of formerly incarcerated persons, community researchers, and youth impacted by incarceration, we will implement a plan of action to support incarcerated parents.
