About this Event
The International Court of Justice’s Advisory Opinion on Palestine and the Prospects for a Just Peace - A Conversation with HE Dr Husam Zomlot, Ambassador of the State of Palestine, Palestine Mission to the UK
On 19 July 2024, the International Court of Justice issued a lengthy and wide-ranging legal opinion on Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory, holding that the occupation was unlawful and must cease as soon as possible. In conversation with Professor of Public International Law Nehal Bhuta, the event will highlight the implications of the Legal Opinion for Palestine’s ongoing struggle for peace, self-determination and territorial integrity, and the role that the United Kingdom and other states committed to a “rules-based international order” should play in response to the Court’s conclusions concerning the illegality of the occupation.
His Excellency Dr Husam Zomlot is the Ambassador of the State of Palestine, Palestinian Mission to the United Kingdom. An economist by training, he holds degrees from LSE and SOAS, and was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School. Between 2017 and 2018, Dr Zomlot represented the Palestine Liberation Organization at its mission to the United States, in Washington DC. He was appointed Head of Mission to the United Kingdom in 2018.
