About this Event
The Hybrid Lab: Conversations in Merging Dance Cultures is part dance party, part performance cypher, and part conversation facilitated by dancer/choreographer/curator/ educator Amy O’Neal. The Hybrid Lab is a space for real time dialogue between dancers merging contemporary and hip hop/Black social dance to experiment with artistic form, build community, and shift power dynamics between artists, venues, funders, and audiences.
New dance works in progress will be shared by Stephen and Aisha, Ardyn Flynt, Satori Folkes-Stone, the evolution of Amy O’Neal 's "A Trio", and surprise guests!

About the organizer: For over 20 years, Amy O'Neal merges the exploratory and social natures of Hip Hop and contemporary dance to challenge notions of race, gender, and the sampling nature of innovation. A sought after choreographer, dancer, curator, and educator she creates dance experiences within theaters, night clubs, galleries, warehouses, dance film, music videos, and virtual reality. Her choreographic work within experimental performance and concert dance has been funded by the National Performance Network, National Dance Project, Creative Capital, Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, and Foundation for Contemporary Art. She has been a long time collaborator of Reggie Watts (band leader of the Late Late Show with Jame Cordon), taught at Ryan Heffington's The Sweat Spot, and is on faculty at The University of Southern California Glorya Kaufman School of Dance where she teaches Hip Hop and house techniques, composition and improvisation, contemporary, Pilates mat, and lectures on Black social dance history, context, and media literacy. As a guest practitioner of Black social dance (specifically Hip Hop and house) she has battled in NYC, Seattle, and the Bay Area, co-organized Seattle House Dance Project, spent many nights in the cyphers of Seattle dance clubs, taught at The Beacon: Massive Monkees Studio, and created Hip Hop curriculum for the University of Washington. Her work as been seen in LA at RedCat NOW Festival, The Electric Lodge, The Bootleg Theater, The Sweat Spot, Grand Performances, LAX Festival, and USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance.
