About this Event
The Human Library® creates a safe space for dialogue where topics are discussed openly between our human books and their readers. All of our human books are volunteers with personal experience with their topic. The Human Library® is a place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.
How it works: Attendees, also known as "readers," will be able to borrow "human books" for 25-minute conversations. All human books come with a title to help readers select what they would like to "read" (ie. with whom they would like to converse). This is an opportunity to speak with people with different lived experiences.
Mutual respect, patience and sensitivity are requirements for participation in this event. If you are interested in participating in this event, please review our on the Library website.
About our Books: Our human books are volunteers and active members of the Arlington community or wider metro DC area. Some of our invited human book topics include: "Nonbinary Person," "Daughter of Holocaust Survivors," "Nonspeaking Autistic," "Sikh," “American Muslim Imam,” “Alcoholic,” “Death Doula,” “Egg Freezing” among others.
Everyone has a story, and they are willing to share theirs with you in this safe environment.
First-come, first-served. By registering on the Library's website, you will receive event updates. PLEASE NOTE: Registering does not guarantee a seat.
Depending upon the turnout, "readers" will be able to place one or more holds on a book. Multiple family members can check out a book together. We regret we cannot place holds in advance of the event. You must be present to place a hold.
Please note: This event is best for ages 14+. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
