The Human Experience: The People Who Entertain Us

Welcome to The Human Experience: Amsterdam’s rooftop speaking series, featuring local residents who contribute to society in a variety of meaningful ways. This series aims to let us meet, think, and come together to talk about our collective human experience and what brings us together.

For our fourth event, we're inviting Sydney-born DJ Shady Lady. Shady Lady started DJing in Sydney as a resident for the feminist and non-binary collective Comfy Grrrl in 2017. She then began to circulate the local disco and art scene,playing for collectives and events like Backyart, Electric Boogie and Heaps Gay, and volunteering as a host for FBi Radio,an alternative music station with a heavy focus on local talent.

She is driven to make the dance floor move as much as she does, always pushing for palpable and joyous tracks. Shady Lady’s usual set is teaming with emotion, colour, a sense of kitsch aesthetic but with an eclectic knowledge of disco and house music. Learn more about her below!

This session will be hosted by artist and Creative Director at Vayne Entertainment, Kevin de Wit. During this evening, you'll learn about Shady Lady and have the opportunity to ask her questions, and mingle with a well-rounded group of likeminded people!

Shady Lady, a Sydney born (Amsterdam based) DJ, time-travels across genres with funky basslines and lyric-laden 1970s disco, 80s italo, protohouse, 90s house, soulful house and deep house. She matches her sound with a high energy and brightly coloured show of dance moves, extravagant outfits and lip syncs. Don’t let the loud looks and comedic value be mistaken for frivolity, go beyond the ever entertaining surface and you’re met with a reverence for disco, house music and the Black & Queer culture it was so clearly born from.

Shady Lady skipped the Southern Hemisphere in 2018, slotting herself nicely into the grooves of the Amsterdam dance music scene. You can find her either live streaming her monthlyShady Lady Show, dancing at the front left speaker or mixing at clubs across the city.

Highlight performances include her Doka set with Millos Kaiser and Trujillo, Milkshake Queer Festival, her Red Light Radio and Operator shows, playing for Night Arcade alongside David Vunk and warming up for Folamour during ADE 2019. Her side hustles include writing film reviews for the music blog Steppin' into Tomorrow and teaching 1980's aerobic classes.

Vayne Entertainment is a creative events production company based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Officially launched in 2022, Vayne is established from the desire to connect talented entertainers in the queer, and drag scene, to fun, innovating, unique events.

The founders, Noah Millman and Kevin de Wit (Miss Vanity Love), both have years of experience working in the local scene, creating or producing events at Paradiso, Melkweg, Boom Chicago, CREA, Bar Italia, and more. In 2020, they began collaborating on the creation of several events, bringing together creative planning, direction, logistical expertise and their wider networks.
