Att utmana Medelhavsmuseets koloniala arv: Samtal I
Med projektet ”Att väcka föremålen till liv- och utmana museernas koloniala historier” utforskar museerna sin historia och roll i kolonialismens idévärld. Projektet har sin utgångspunkt i två Riksbankens Jubileumsfond finansierade forskningsprojekt, Koloniala objekt (Mårten Snickare) och Mänsklighetens gränser (Linda Andersson Burnett). Forskningen tydliggör hur insamling och tidig modern vetenskap är sammanvävda med den koloniala historien. Att väcka föremålen till liv vill föra samtal om dessa frågor, både med besökare och med de grupper som representerar samlingarnas ursprungskontext.
Moderator är Didem Yildirim, projektledare Världskulturmuseerna.
Sara Sallam (f. 1991) är en egyptisk konstnär, designer, författare, visuell forskare, bokmakare och pedagog baserad i Nederländerna. Hennes forskningsbaserade praktik inkluderar fotografi, rörlig bild, skrivande, röstberättande, arkivinterventioner och självpublicering av handgjorda böcker. I sitt arbete reflekterar hon över sin uppväxt i Egypten och kritiserar de koloniala attityder som är inbäddade i arkeologi, museipraxis och fotografiska arkiv och som hindrar egyptierna från att relatera till sitt förflutna och sina förfäder. Hon fokuserar på återberättandet av historien genom att föreställa sig motberättelser och utforska fiktion och temporala sammanställningar som sätt att återta och avkolonisera sitt egyptiska arv.
Linda Andersson Burnett är docent i vetenskaps- och idéhistoria vid Uppsala universitet. Hon forskar om rasismens historia och svenska och brittiska kolonialresor under 1700- och 1800-talen. Lindas karriär började vid University of Edinburgh där hon tog en doktorsexamen i historia (2012). Hon har varit Simon Fellow vid Institutet för avancerade studier i humaniora (2012-2013), också i Edinburgh, och ledde en forskargrupp om kolonialism vid Linnéuniversitetet (2014-2019). Linda är P.I. av forskningsprogrammet Instructing Natural History: Nature, People, Empire vid Uppsala universitet, som undersöker instruktionernas historia i relation till kolonialt samlande och resor. Hon samarbetar också med Världskulturmuseerna genom programmet Bringing the objects to life – och utmanar museernas koloniala historia.

Challenging the Colonial Heritage of the Museum of the Mediterranean: Conversation I
As part of the project Bringing objects to life and challenging the colonial histories of museums.
A conversation about the view of human remains in museums and people as museum objects. The conversation takes place between Egyptian artist Sara Sallam, researcher and historian of ideas Linda Andersson Burnett and Sofia Häggman, Egyptologist and curator at the Museum of Mediterranean.

With the project "Bringing objects to life and challenging the colonial histories of museums", museums explore their history and role in the world of colonialism. The project is based on two research projects funded by the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond , Colonial Objects (Mårten Snickare) and Humanity's Limits (Linda Andersson Burnett). The research clarifies how collection and early modern science are interwoven with colonial history. Bringing the objects to life wants to have conversations about these issues, both with visitors and with the groups that represent the collections' original context.

Sara Sallam (b. 1991) is an Egyptian artist, designer, writer, visual researcher, book maker, and educator based in the Netherlands. Her research-based practice includes photography, moving images, writing, voice narration, archival interventions, and self-publishing handmade books. Through her work, she reflects on growing up in Egypt, criticising the colonial attitudes embedded in archaeology, museum practices, and photographic archives that prevent Egyptians from relating to their past and ancestors. She focuses on the retelling of history by imagining counter-narratives and exploring fiction and temporal juxtapositions as ways to reclaim and decolonise her Egyptian heritage.
Linda Andersson Burnett is an Associate Professor of History of Science and Ideas at Uppsala University. She researches the history of racism and Swedish and British colonial travel in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Linda’s career began at the University of Edinburgh where she took a PhD in History (2012). She has been the Simon Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (2012-2013), also at Edinburgh, and directed a research group on colonialism at Linnaeus University (2014-2019). Linda is is the P.I. of the research programme Instructing Natural History: Nature, People, Empire at Uppsala University, which investigates the history of instructions in relation to colonial collecting and travelling. She is also collaborating with the Museums of World Cultures through the programme Bringing the objects to life – and challenging the museums’ colonial histories.
