About this Event
Join former Saanich Councillor David Cubberley for an in-depth look at his experience in restoring and living in the personal home of one of the most prolific architects of the Arts and Crafts movement in Victoria: Hubert Savage. Mr. Cubberley will explore how the bungalow came about, how it was sited, and why it is a bonafide Arts and Crafts building.
Mr. Cubberley served as a Saanich municipal Councillor for several terms between 1990 and 2006. While on Council he was invited to serve as liaison to the municipal heritage advisory committee and the Saanich Heritage Foundation which, among other things, oversees the program of annual grants for restoration work. It was fitting that he was associated with the heritage community as he happened to own a heritage building: the Hubert Savage Bungalow. In 2013, the year of the bungalow's centennial, he launched his blog (Century Bungalow) to celebrate the bungalow having made it through a full century. Over the years, I've kept the blog going as I probed further into Hubert Savage's background as an Arts and Crafts architect, the various stylistic choices he made, and just how his Arts and Crafts values were expressed in the building of his lifetime home.
