“The Hour Of Liberation has Arrived, “ directed by Heiny Srour, 1974 62 minutes. In 1965 in the region of Dhofar, an extraordinary guerrilla movement rose up against the son of Saïd Ibn Taimour, the Sultan of Oman who had just been overthrown in a coup organized by the British secret service. La Libertad,” directed by Laura Huertas Millá is an uncompromising documentary about a revolution in the making, and the unique story of a forgotten war.
… Heiny Srour is a filmmaker born in Lebanon in 1945. She studied Social Anthropology in Paris, where she later worked as a journalist and film critic and developed an interest in Third World cinema. In her films, Srour examines the role of Arab women in revolutions. She has shot films in Oman and Vietnam and has documented the Palestinian people’s struggle. Her documentary film The Hour of Liberation Has Arrived (1974) was screened at the Cannes Film Festival, the first film by a woman from the Arab world to be selected.
20.30 = “La Libertad,” directed by Laura Huertas Millán, 2017, 30 minutes.
A visually dazzling documentary on the pre-Hispanic weaving traditions of indigenous women in Mexico, that through the matrilinear lines of successive women has been preserved of all its richness and cultural importance. Short in duration, but it manages to pack in a lot of history and cultural significance of these traditions from Mesoamerica in an in-depth, loving detail.
