'The horses back – a deep dive'
This workshop is on October 17th 2026 and is a collaboration between Vet Dr Lily Wilson BVetMed BSc (Hons) MRVCS of Nurturing Nature Equine (www.nurturingnatureequine.co.uk) and Kat Layfield, Qualified saddle fitter (MSFC) specialising in remedial fitting as well as being a French classical trainer (Légèreté) from Thinking Equitation (www.thinkingequitation.com).
The horse’s back is not only a place for the saddle and for us to sit on, but also the junction of the entire rest of the body - the neck, the ribcage, the limbs, and the pelvis. This means the back both affects and reflects the function, comfort, and health of all these body parts. When investigating the back, it is usual to look at x-rays, which can be helpful and very needed. There is also so much more to the back than the dorsal spinous processes (the part we can see on x-rays) and even if x-rays are clear, that doesn’t rule out back pain.
In this workshop, you will learn:
• How many important structures there are in the back and how the back is connected to the rest of the body.
• Why all this is important for the way we ride, train, and care for our horses.
• How to observe your horse for signs of back problems, and ways we can assess the back diagnostically.
• How day to day care such as feeding, housing, and use of equipment can protect and even help the back.
• More about kissing spine.
• Demystify saddle fitting, giving you more confidence to be your horses advocate regarding the fit of their saddle.
• Identifying good and bad saddle design features and assessing saddle fit for balance, length and design suitability.
• What a healthy saddle support area looks like and how to spot an unhealthy saddle support area, regarding muscle atrophy.
• Understanding how remedial saddle fitting and correct rehabilitation can be used to improve back health.
The workshop is limited to 8 participants so book promptly to secure your place and avoid disappointment. The cost is £125 per person, payable in full on booking (non-refundable).
The workshop is on October 17th, 2026, near Horsham (RH12 3DL), it starts at 10.00am and finish at approximately 3.30pm.
