If you have been one of the thousands of visitors who have enjoyed this remarkable reserve over the years or enjoyed the view of it from the top of the Transporter Bridge, you may think you know everything about Newport’s Wetlands– well think again – discover the origins of this valuable haven for wildlife on the doorstep of a city with this fascinating talk in the company of Jeremy White.Brought to you by the Newport Transporter Bridge Project and as part of Local and Community History Month, discover how this valuable Gwent Levels haven for wildlife on our city’s doorstep, evolved from prehistoric saltmarsh into a post-industrial wildlife reserve via the Roman and medieval periods. We look at how the reserve, stretching from Uskmouth to Goldcliff, evolved from prehistoric saltmarsh into the present-day, post-industrial wildlife reserve taking in some Roman and medieval history to see how the Gwent Levels took shape.
We’ll also look at the Victorian influence on the landscape, the impact of World War II and the two transformations brought about by electricity generation at Uskmouth. Finally, we’ll talk about the wildlife and some possibilities for the future.
Jeremy White has been a dedicated and engaging volunteer for RSPB Cymru for six years, with a wealth of knowledge of this incredible reserve, this is sure to be an enjoyable and entertaining presentation!
This is a free talk but donations to the Newport Transporter Bridge Project are always welcome.
The talk will be held in the Art Gallery on the 3rd Floor.
