Join Dr Emma Cunningham in examining the long, courageous trajectory of female-led dissent across the UK. By breaking down defining moments - from equal pay strikes and anti-racist organizing to campaign work against state violence - this presentation demonstrates how women’s liberation in Britain has always been intrinsically tied to broader struggles for human rights and social reform.
By connecting historical movements to the socio-political landscape of 21st-century Britain, we’ll learn how to apply a critical lens to evaluate today's activist movements. The discussion uncovers how women have adapted their strategies in the face of changing legal frameworks, media representation, and police powers across decades. A Senior Lecturer at the University of East London, Dr Emma Cunningham applies an intersectional feminist approach to research, teaching, and engagement centered on social justice and equality. Focusing on policing, their work examines police culture, stop and search, and the resilience of policewomen navigating systemic challenges. Their scholarship contributes significantly to the history of women’s integration into policing. A frequent media commentator, [Name] has featured in The Guardian, i News, Sky News, and the BBC. Through creative methodologies, networks, and publications—including Foreign Affairs New Zealand and The Irish News—they critically explore misogyny, inclusion, and the complex realities of modern policing.
