That history began back in 1973 when iconic musician Herbie Hancock formed the band featuring Bennie Maupin, Paul Jackson Jr., Harvey Mason, and Bill Summers. What each member of The Headhunters brought to the table helped forge a timeless legacy and history that most bands can only dream of.

The band has released 6 more full-length albums including ‘Thrust’ in 1974 with the addition of drummer Mike Clark, and stepping out on their own sans Hancock's involvement on ‘Survival of the Fittest’ in 1975 and “Straight from the Gate” in 1977. The Headhunters music would go on to influence countless musicians' styles of playing today.

His incisive playing on Hancock’s “Actual Proof” garnered him an international cult following and influenced generations of drummers. While Mike digs the funk, he considers jazz his first love, and playing that music is what he says feeds his soul. Besides Herbie Hancock, Mike has performed and recorded with such well-known jazz greats as Christian McBride, Chet Baker, John Scofield, Tony Bennett, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Donald Harrison, Eddie Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Vince Guaraldi, Woody Shaw, Albert King, Larry Coryell, Mike Wolff, Wallace Roney, Billy Childs, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Chris Potter, Bobby McFerrin, Nat Adderly, Oscar Brown Jr., and Gil Evans and his Orchestra.

In the HBO drama “Treme”, Emmy award-winning director David Simon created two characters to portray how Harrison innovated new styles of music. Harrison honed his experience playing with Roy Haynes, Art Blakey, Eddie Palmieri, Dr. John, Lena Horne, McCoy Tyner, Dr. Eddie Henderson, Miles Davis, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Chuck Loeb, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Digable Planets, Guru’s Jazzmatazz, The Headhunters, The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and The Notorious BIG. He has performed with over 200 jazz masters and created three influential styles of jazz. Harrison has been a mentor to artist as diverse as The Notorious Big, Jonathon Batiste, Christian Scott, Trombone Shorty, and Esperanza Spalding.
