The Haunted Book Society: A Gothic Altered Book Workshop

Take an abandoned old book and begin transforming it into something wonderfully strange.

In The Haunted Book Society, you’ll create the beginnings of your own gothic altered book—starting with a dramatic mixed-media cover featuring one of our signature molded skulls, layers of texture, paint, and your choice of creepy embellishments.

Then comes the fun part: Choose Your Curse.

Select from one of our themed Haunted Book Society collections—each filled with eerie archive pages, mysterious records, ephemera, pockets, hidden messages, and other strange little discoveries to begin building the story inside your book.

Your book might contain evidence from an abandoned greenhouse, correspondence that should have stayed unanswered, records from a forgotten crypt, pages from a forbidden manuscript, or another mystery pulled straight from the Haunted Book Society archives.

This is not a “finish an entire altered book in one night” workshop. Instead, you’ll learn how to start an altered book, create several finished pages and interactive elements, and leave with a beautifully creepy foundation you can continue adding to whenever inspiration strikes.

Along the way, you’ll experiment with layering, distressing, collage, pockets, paper ephemera, texture, paint, and mixed-media techniques. No altered-book experience is necessary—and your book does not have to look like anyone else’s.

What to Bring

Bring an old hardcover book you’re willing to transform. Reader’s Digest books are perfect and can often be found inexpensively at thrift stores, but almost any sturdy hardcover will work. You can even bring a hardcover sketchbook if you’d like to continue creating artwork inside after class.

We Supply the Rest

Your molded skull, paints, texture materials, themed curse pages, ephemera, embellishments, and all the wonderfully weird bits you’ll need are included.

If ordinary crafts leave you a little bored, your membership in The Haunted Book Society may be long overdue.
