Yorkshire-born jazz, soul and global beats return for a special summer session at Peggy’s Skylight in Nottingham on 10th June, headlined by a group once described by producer Mark Ronson as “the best horn section in the world” - UK funk heavyweights The Haggis Horns.
For more than 25 years, The Haggis Horns have been at the forefront of the UK funk scene. They first gained recognition as the powerhouse horn section behind the influential Keb Darge Presents The New Mastersounds deep funk release in 2001. By 2004, they had evolved into a full band in their own right, developing a distinctive northern funk sound that blends breakbeats, Afrobeat, soul, raw funk and hip-hop into a high-energy live experience.
Renowned for setting dance floors alight across clubs and festivals worldwide, the band have built a reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting live acts.
Their discography includes five groove-driven albums - Hot Damn! and Keep On Movin on First Word Records, followed by three releases on their own Haggis Records label, launched in 2015: What Comes To Mind, One Of These Days, and Stand Up For Love (2021).
Individually and collectively, members of the band have worked with an impressive list of artists including Jamiroquai, John Legend & The Roots, Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae, Mark Ronson, Martha Reeves, Roots Manuva, Lou Donaldson, Elbow, Nightmares On Wax, Adele, Robbie Williams, The Cinematic Orchestra, Lisa Stansfield, Kano, Estelle and many more.
Their sound channels the spirit of 1970s funk and soul greats such as The JBs, Maceo Parker, Kool & The Gang (early years), Donald Byrd, The Blackbyrds, The Mizell Brothers, Earth, Wind & Fire and Average White Band. Mixing instrumental grooves with vocal tracks - often featuring Mancunian vocalist Martin O’Connor - their sets are packed with feel-good energy, deep soul and irresistible rhythms guaranteed to fill the dance floor.
