Leeds' favourite jazz/soul/funk/global beats DJ and promoter Lubi Jovanovic (DJ Lubi), celebrates his 40th anniversary working in music in 2022. A real landmark so he's throwing a few special events and shows over the summer months including a big funk/soul party on this night at the Brudenell. He's invited along some mates to headline who just happen to be one of the UK's top funk bands - The Haggis Horns. And to open up the show, he's showcasing a new Leeds soul queen. Talking about young soul singer Mica Sefia and her heavy 8 piece band. Playing scratchy old soul classics and new funk gems on vinyl before, between and after sets will be Lubi and fellow DIG Family legendary DJ and longtime mate Gip Dammone.
The Haggis Horns are now a musical institution within the UK's funk/soul scene. Since they first hit the music scene in 1999, they have established themselves as one of the top funk/soul/jazz-funk bands in the country. Their now legendary horn section has worked with Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Martha Reeves, Lou Donaldson, Jamiroquai, Corinne Bailey Rae to name a few. In 2007, they released their debut LP "Hot Damn!" with UK hip-hop/soul/jazz/beats label First Word Records followed up in 2010 with their second album for the label “Keep On Moving”. In 2015, they released their third album “What Comes To Mind” on their own new label Haggis Records and in summer 2017, they dropped their first single on the label “Take It Back” featuring guest rapper Doc Brown. The fourth Haggis Horns album "One Of These Days" was released on Haggis Records in autumn 2017.
In 2020, they were planning to release their fifth album "Stand Up For Love" and had a spring/summer UK promo tour booked around the release when covid hit the UK and live music was shut down. The album came out but they couldn't gig to promote it until autumn 2021. Their first gig after covid restrictions were lifted was a packed hometown show at Brudenell in October 2021 for DJ Lubi, the original album promo show from spring 2020 rescheduled 18 months later. Sadly, DJ Lubi actually missed that gig as he had covid at the time and had to self-isolate. So this special night is a chance to catch up with some old mates he's been working with since 1999 and finally hear them play the new songs from the fifth album as well as much loved Haggis Horns classics from their back catalogue. They only gig in their hometown once or twice a year so if you love world class live funk and soul, get down.
Support comes from a new vocal soul star in Leeds. Mica Sefia is originally from Liverpool and started singing in a choir aged 7 before moving onto musical theatre and then at 16, she studied popular music at Liverpool Institute Of Performing Arts (6th Form). At 16/17, she was already performing at venues around Liverpool including the legendary Philharmonic Music Room. Two years ago, she arrived at Leeds Conservatoire to continue her popular music studies and got her band together to perform her original music (which she started writing at age 16). They've played at venues across the city including Belgrave Music Hall and Hyde Park Book Club. She also sings in other Leeds bands including funk/rock band Fuchsia and rapper Yusuf Yellow's live band The Energy Collective. She's performed packed shows with the latter at Brudenell Social Club and Hifi Club Sunday Joint.
Asked who her favourite five singers were, Mica often replies with an eclectic list of classic and contemporary soul, pop, rock and folk artists - India Arie, Brittany Howard, Mahalia, Victoria Mońet, Mary J Blige. Great choices and an indication that Mica's own music can't be pigeonholed into just one genre. In January 2022, she packed out the Hifi Club's legendary Sunday Joint for her first major headline show and has since been doing shows at other well known Leeds venues. It's time now for Mica to step out with her own band for the first time onto the legendary Brudenell stage. The perfect warm up for The Haggis Horns and a continuation of the tradition of great soul music made in Leeds that goes back decades and generations.
Before, between and after live sets, DJs Lubi and Gip will be playing a vinyl-only set of past and present funk, soul, jazz funk, boogie and global beats. Something they've been doing together now for almost as long as the four decades DJ Lubi is celebrating in the music game tonight.
