The Green Industrial Design Jam

Calling all designers, architects, engineers, planners, makers, tinkers, hobbyists, gardeners, scientists, sustainability experts, innovators, chefs, manufacturers, creatives, entrepreneurs, problem solvers, students/teachers, and anyone with an interest in exploring sustainable manufacturing in New York!

Mangrove FC and the Urban Manufacturing Alliance are taking applications for participation in a Green Industrial Design Jam! Come collaborate and brainstorm new sustainable, circular, and regenerative design strategies for two New York City manufacturers.

This event will start off on Friday, May 20 with a factory tour* and on Saturday, May 21 we will host a collaborative in-person* Design Jam.

Multidisciplinary teams - including a diverse cross section of industry and subject matter experts as well as students and designers from a broad spectrum of design - will be selected to participate in this two-part hands-on design challenge. Sign up now, participation will be limited. Participants will be notified about their participation no later than May 9.

Teams will be curated to ensure representation from different levels of sustainability, design, and manufacturing expertise. Students and novices are encouraged to participate! No prior experience in design is needed. Participants are expected to embrace diversity of ideas and backgrounds of teammates. Selected participants are expected to commit fully.

Friday May 20, 1pm to 5pm - Factory Tours - Our manufacturing partners will open their facilities to give participants a first hand look at their manufacturing processes. Due to limited space, a subset of participants will be selected for the tours.

Saturday May 21, 9:30am to 4pm - Design Jam - Over the course of the Jam, teams will be introduced to manufacturing capabilities, learn about sustainability strategies, and utilize design methods to develop new sustainable products, explore material management strategies, and identify holistic manufacturing practices.

All ideas, opportunities, and strategies generated at the Design Jam will be packaged and presented to our manufacturing partners, helping them adopt new practices and making them more sustainable and resilient.
