What is the Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch?
The Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch is an annual event hosted by MSU Extension and the Michigan Farm to Institution Network to promote National Farm to School Month and celebrate the iconic Michigan Apple. Thousands of participants from K-12 schools, Early Care and Education sites and other institutions and organizations across the state and Great Lakes Region register to crunch into a local Michigan apple on Crunch Day. Apples provide a great way to get local schools and institutions excited about supporting local farmers and they are a nutritious snack that is available in Michigan eleven months of the year.
The Great Lakes Great Apple Crunch encourages healthy eating and supports farm to school and other local food purchasing initiatives throughout the region. It’s also a fun way to connect food and agriculture to classroom curricula – from science to art & more!
Join the Great Lakes states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio in celebrating National Farm to School Month ➚ by crunching into locally and regionally grown apples on an annually designated Crunch Day! (usually celebrated in schools on October 16, but we’ve designated an additional day!)
We’ll be having our BIG group Crunch here at the Grand River Farmers Market on Saturday, October 18, at 11:00 am! (of course, you can crunch with us anytime that day!) We’ll also have an apple craft, apple recipes, apple science experiments, and other fun offerings!
Participants of all ages are invited to crunch - there were almost 350,000 participants last year!
