“My love of pleasure seems to be the only consistent side of my character.
Is it because I have not read enough?”
Bonjour Tristesse, Françoise Sagan

Join editor Hannah Boursnell at ’s brand-new home for a book club with a difference.
Over three (hopefully balmy) summer evenings, we’ll bring the French Riviera to Sheffield while discussing Françoise Sagan’s scandalous 1954 novella, Bonjour Tristesse. Together, we’ll deep-dive into plot, character, dialogue. . . and exactly which scenes were originally censored in the UK.
And all with a glass of ice-cold (French) rosé in hand.
~
- Session 1: Thursday 27th June, 7.30pm–9.00pm
- Session 2: Thursday 11th July, 7.30pm–9.00pm
- Session 3: Thursday 25th Junly, 7.30pm–9.00pm
One ticket = admittance to all three dates

The French Riviera: home to the Beautiful People. And none are more beautiful than Cécile, a precocious seventeen-year-old, and her father Raymond, a vivacious libertine. Charming, decadent and irresponsible, the golden-skinned duo are dedicated to a life of free love, fast cars and hedonistic pleasures. But then, one long, hot summer, Raymond decides to marry and Cécile and her lover Cyril feel compelled to take a hand in his amours, with tragic consequences.
Bonjour Tristesse scandalized 1950s France with its portrayal of teenager terrible Cécile, a heroine who rejects conventional notions of love, marriage and responsibility to choose her own sexual freedom.
Hosted by freelance editor Hannah Boursnell, each session will include a guided discussion on a different element of the book, from technical aspects such as plot and characterisation to the cultural and social context in which the book was written and published.
The Good Readers Club is perfect for writers who want to hone their craft, but we also welcome anyone who loves a good story and is interested in how and why writers do what they do.
Price includes: Admittance to all three dates, 15% discount on copies of the book purchased via Novel, a glass of wine (or soft drink) at each event and summary handouts on the topics covered.
