LOCATION: The Secret Movie Club Theater, 1917 Bay Street, 2nd Floor, Los Angeles, CA 90021
PARKING: Please note our entrance is NOT on Bay Street. You access our entrance from Wilson Street by turning into the street art alleyway/corridor in the back of the building. Look for our signs which guide you to parking. Audience can park for free in corridor in any space that doesn’t have a street sign or door/stairs/gate. Free parking is also available on Wilson and Bay Streets.
Filmmaker/animator Usman Riaz has an incredible story from his origins as a child prodigy to studying at Studio Ghibli in Japan to building from scratch an animation studio in Pakistan to make his animated feature The Glassworker now Pakistan's official 2024 Oscar entry.
And he'll be with us for a post screening Q&A to talk to you about how he got it done.
The Glassworker, very much in the hand drawn tradition of Studio Ghibli, tells the story of young Vincent and his father Tomas, who run the finest glass workshop in the country. They find their lives upended by an impending war in which they want no part. The arrival in their town of an army colonel and his young, talented violinist daughter, Alliz, shakes their reality and tests the relationship between father and son.
While so many current animated features are designed and produced through computer, Riaz chose the painstaking route of hand drawn cell animation (much like mentor Hayao Miyazaki in Japan) to create a handmade, personal animation whose emotional style matches its content.
Secret Movie Club believes world cinema is one of the keys to bringing us back together as a world and a community. Whenever we have the chance to showcase a new world cinema work, we will. Join us tonight for an incredible screening with the director in person to take your questions and talk about how he got it done.
Best always,
