Set in St Louis during the depression era of the 1930s, The Glass Menagerie is the poignant drama of a family’s gradual disintegration under pressure both from outside and within. Amanda Wingfield, the frustrated mother who is a faded Southern Belle, persuades her rebellious son Tom to find a ‘gentleman caller’ for her shy, emotionally frail daughter Laura. But her romantic dreams are shattered by the intervention of harsh reality. Tom Wingfield is torn between his responsibilities towards his family and his desire for personal freedom. At the center of the story is Laura's collection of glass animals, her "menagerie," which symbolizes her fragility and vulnerability. This timeless story of the human condition explores themes of illusion versus reality, the nature of memory, and the crushing weight of familial obligations.
